Kenya is among the leading Netflix markets in Africa with a considerable number of paid subscribers. Data by DataHom.com, shows that Netflix subscribers in Kenya will grow by at least 79% in 2020.
The data indicates that by Q4 2020, Kenya will have about 29,510 Netflix subscribers. The figure represents a growth of 79% from 2019’s estimates of 16,480 subscribers. In 2018, Kenyan Netflix subscribers were about 8,740, a growth of 140% from 2017’s 3,640 subscribers. In general, from 2017 to 2020, the number of subscribers will grow by a staggering 710%.
Kenyan Interest in Netflix Grows
Notably, the interest of Kenyan regarding the streaming platform has grown in 2020. DataHom.com analyzed data from the search engine platform regarding Kenyan queries on Netflix. The data indicates that from the week of Jan 5- 11 2020, and the Week of May 3- 9, Kenyans Google search about Netflix have grown by 137.14%.
At the start of the year, the queries had a search popularity of 35 and by May 3-11, the popularity score on Google stood at 83. Notably, the searches achieved a peak score of 100 during the week of March 29 -April 4. From the week of March 8-14, the peak popularity started rising gradually from 31 to 100.
During this period, many Kenyans were confined into their homes as the government encouraged people to stay at homes as a means of curbing the spread of Coronavirus. Most people turned to television as a way of passing time. This is a trend that has been replicated globally due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Notably, more Kenyans continue to show interest in Netflix from different towns mostly within the Nairobi metropolitan area. From the data, residents of Kikuyu are more interested in knowing more about Netflix with a Google search peak score of 100. Athi River comes second with a score of 86 followed by Ruiru at 85 while Juja and Mombasa have tied with a popularity score of 79.
Nakuru comes sixth with a Google search popularity score of 57 followed by Thika at 55. Nairobi is seventh at 41 while Eldoret has a popularity score of 41.
It is worth noting that the current Google search popularity scores can change considering that the data undergoes a weekly review. The popularity score refers to Google search interest relative to the highest point for the given region and time. In this case, a value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term while a value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means there was not enough data for this term.
Global Netflix Users Steadily Grows
The data also overviewed the number of Netflix subscribers globally based on each quarter from 2020. The information was provided by Netflix in March 2020, during its quarterly financial report.
By the first quarter of 2020, registered Netflix’s highest number of subscribers ever at 182.86 million with 69.9 million of the subscribers originating from the United States alone. From the data, Netflix’s streaming service has been increasing in popularity despite having some seasons where the American company had a review of its subscription fees.
The Netflix library comes with a wealth of content on multiple genres and a diverse catalog of TV shows, movies, and documentaries. The platform appeals to a wide audience and consistently keeps users hooked with its often binge-worthy original content.
